Community members donate stuffed animals to Beaumont pediatric patients

Children want to run, play and be outside. Being stuck inside a hospital can be tough and
frightening for them. With this in mind, members  of the community have donated stuffed animals
to different pediatric areas at Beaumont.

Gary Wachler of David Wachler & Sons Jewelry in Birmingham recently started Comfort Bears for
Kids, an organization that collects donations to purchase small teddy bears for hospitalized
children.

At Beaumont, the bears go to children having surgery in the Ghesquire Family Center for
Children’s Surgery. “When kids come in, they’re scared and out of their element,” says Gary.
“Hopefully, when they see the bears, they get a little comfort and it brings a smile to their faces.”

In an unrelated effort earlier this year, the Kroger store in Birmingham donated several dozen
stuffed animals, in a variety of shapes and sizes, to Pediatric Rehab. The department gives them to
children on special occasions, such as birthdays. “The kids that receive animals are always
extremely happy,” says Deborah Adsit, supervisor of Pediatric Rehab.
